What We Do

The purpose of the Student Senate shall be to serve the student body of the University of Maine at Farmington, to enhance social, cultural, and educational programs and activities to expand the scope of the education experience by providing the most effective use to student money and effort, by informing students of issues which are their concern and to eliminate confusion about tose issues, by representing the student body to the University of Maine System, the administration at UMF, and any other appropriate body or organization, and to give input to those bodies relating to student opinions and by encouraging student participation and input.

So What Does That Mean?

We are the elected governing body for the students at UMF. We report directly to President Theo Kalikow and take your concerns, issues, suggestions, and comments to the appropriate people. We make sure your voice is heard.

Every year, in the spring semester, you elect an Exec Board consisting of six members. President, Vice President, Officer of Financial Affairs, Officer of Club Rights and Affairs, Secretary, and Parliamentarian. Then, every year in the fall when you return to school, you have a chance to elect 19 general assembly members who make up the rest of the Senate.

Beyond reporting to the administration on your behalf, and representing the UMF students on the Faculty Senate and UMaine System Board of Trustees, we also allocate all the Student Activity Fees you pay. Every year we take the SAF funding and distribute it amongst the clubs and organizations on this campus. Not only do we fund all the clubs and organizations, we help students create new clubs, and help to fund students and clubs/orgnizations to go to conferences, educational trips, and hositng their own conferences here at UMF.

So what do we do? We are here to serve you. We represent you on all levels of the UMaine System, we ensure the activities you participate in are funded, and we make sure your voices are being heard.
